Prisoner Cell Block H

...is an Australian TV drama/soap opera, set in the "Wentworth Detention Centre", a fictional women's prison. It broadcast on Network Ten from '79 to '86, (8 seasons and 692 Eps). It has since, acquired worldwide cult classic status, particularly for its somewhat outrageous & often melodramatic acting and plot lines. Its cultural impact has inspired several contemporary adaptations, including the equally-successful series Wentworth.   I joined the show in its final year as "wise cracking inmate Vicki McPherson"  - in for drug dealing. Although I was written into some dark plot lines and scenes with violence, my character swung between hard-nosed, greedy, violent henchman and idiotic, far-fetched comic relief (especially near the end of the year). As an actor inexperienced in television, I often got whiplash trying to reconcile the various flip flops and contradictory functions written in to my scenes. I eventually gave up trying to make sense of the character's through line with any consistency and just tried to keep my head above water and play the scenes as they came. My character was usually always on the side of the "baddies" against the "goodies" in the power struggle to become "Top Dog" ie the head prisoner. Although, I spent time in each camp along the way. "Vicki" was most often associated with 2 successive "baddies" ("Kath" & "Spider") as their "right hand" in their efforts to lie, cheat, steal and con their way to power.
