* Eisteddfods: (of Welsh origin)
...have also been adopted into Australian culture. Much like the Welsh original, eisteddfods are competitions that involve "testing individuals in singing, dancing, acting or musicianship". Modern equivalents in Australia are competitions reserved for schoolchildren, though many have open sections where anyone (including professionals) may participate and compete.
When I was competing, we'd be presented with a Certificate for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or as I recall..."Highly Commended", a written critique from the Adjudicator - with points out of 100 - and a small cash amount. (like $1.50 for first place)
At the end of a week-long competition a scholarship would be awarded to the Best Overall Competitor. I was first awarded at 11
(something of a surprise to everyone as it's usually given to an older competitor - 17 or 18 year old) & in subsequent Eisteddfods it earned much needed tuition fees at both local and state events.
